Charly Blacks To Be Honored, Posted By : Jacqueline Burnes, Updated January 23, 2009, 1:11AM
Dancehall artiste Charly Black said he was pleased to know
that residents of his native parish, Trelawny, are prepared to crown him a hometown ambassador.
The deejay, who would normally highlight his community in songs
and performances, will be crowned at Mahogany Hall in Jackson Town, Trelawny,
at an event called The Crowning of Charly Black, organized in recognition of his endorsements.
Promoter Robert 'Chemist' James told THE WEEKEND STAR that they wanted to show the artiste their
gratification.
"It's a good thing. There
are many artistes from Trelawny who never got this opportunity. To me, it's like everything is coming to fulfilment,"
he said.
Charly Black, who grew up in Rio Bueno,
Trelawny, and is a father of three (Alicia, Bryan and Kevin), has also recorded in one year a string of 'money anthem' songs
in which he directly referred to Trelawny as his favorite place. The two most noticed songs are Rich Dis Year and Money Dreamer.
"Well, it's the love I have for the people.
Based on what I have done, they decided to give me this award. This overwhelms me. I don't even know what to expect,"
he said, noting that many of the youths in Trelawny look up to him.
Also, Charly Black is widely recognised as a community philanthropist and regularly gives back to
the area in the form of back-to-school treats and concerts, where proceeds go towards charity.
Neressia Martin, 32 (a resident in the parish),
spoke highly of the deejay, whose career in music started as a selector on Bass Odyssey (St Ann) and Interceptor (Trelawny). Martin says she believes
the artiste was worthy of the award
"Yes, he deserves it. He's a good person and
he has a good heart.
Plus, he is a good
role model for Trelawny. People can rely on him for sure," she said.
Martin also pointed out that other communities should take a note from this venture, saying,
"People need to see what others are doing. It should be broadcasted."

Black
Ryno Jailed, Posted By: Jacqueline Burnes, Updated October 30, 2009 7:15PM
Dancehall artist Black Ryno
was released yesterday after spending a night in jail for an alleged attack on his neighbor at his Winchester Estate apartment.
The popular singer was slapped with two charges of unlawful wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm as a result. Police
say the incident stemmed from a dispute over unpaid water bills by the artiste, whose real name is Romane Anderson.
Reports are that about 7:15 p.m.
on Saturday, the complainant, who is chairman of the strata committee at the apartment complex, was in a long-standing dispute
over unpaid water contributions, which is mandatory for residents.
Police reports indicate that the altercation got ugly when the complainant was accused of damaging pipes,
resulting in loss of water to Ryno's home. During the argument, Black Ryno is alleged to have kicked the complainant to the
ground and kicked him repeatedly all over his body. This is said to have resulted in cuts to the complainant's shoulder and
both elbows, as well as swellings on the side of the head, back, face, stomach and chest. A report was made to the Half-Way
Tree Police Station and the artiste was arrested and charged.
LANDLORD'S RESPONSIBILITY
The STAR spoke with Black Ryno, who was at the time at a mineral bath making efforts to "wash
away the crosses" he says was brought against him unjustly.
"From yu hear dat u mus know a lie. Di non-payments cause by my landlord, and him (complainant)
know that, but him want a reason fi come a style man caa him dun seh me as a ghetto yout nu fi deh deh (don't belong there),"
said the soft-spoken Ryno.
He also indicated
that the police charged him based on the complainant's report.
"From long time dis man a do tings fi try draw me out so him can do dis ... all walk him dog come p——
pon mi mat regular an dem nastiness deh. Di ting did get physical after him walk come over my apartment, which is way down
a corridor from his own, with his dog," Ryno explained.
He continued, "Me have nothin' gainst dogs,
but dis one rush me, so mi ease (kick) him off wit mi foot in defence and dis man box me, so a suh di ting get physical ...
mi did mad seh him mash up mi water pipe dem yes. All police weh come fi arrest mi seh him wrong."
Efforts to secure station bail for Ryno proved futile on Saturday
night, as the complainant told police Ryno had threatened his life, so they decided to hold him for the night.
JAIL CELL PANDEMONIUM
But that night of incarceration was an experience Ryno says didn't bother him, as the overwhelming
eruption of exuberance from prisoners at the jail made him feel more welcome than at his 'uptown' apartment complex.
"It come like a Gaza mi deh although mi deh a jail, caa every
man in deh a seh Gaza ... mek yu feel comfortable fi know nobody nah do yu nothing. Imagine mi cyaa get da peace deh whe mi
live," said Ryno.
A police source confirmed
that the response from the jailed men was overwhelming.
"As
dem hear is Black Ryno in jail with them you could hear the pandemonium from the station, which is a separate building ...
look like a whole heap of Gaza fans we have lock up, so I can imagine how many songs Ryno sing," quipped the officer,
who requested anonymity.

Brown Sugar Crowned Digicel's New
Rising Star 2009!, Posted By :Jacqueline Burnes, September 24, 2009 @ 4:24PM
Brown Sugar's thank you list went well beyond
friends, family and fans after she was last night crowned the 2009 Digicel Rising Stars winner at the Courtleigh Auditorium,
New Kingston. Dubbed as the 'sweet one' out of Montego Bay, Brown Sugar, who was by far the overwhelming favourite
leading into the finals, had tears running down her cheeks when she collected her cash prize of one million dollars. Her impressive
journey started back in June, at the very first live studio performance show, and though her victory was something many had
predicted, she was at a lost for words, saying "It is the most significant time of my life."
There were times when she felt as if she would be eliminated,
and there were also times when she dreaded the thought of facing Judge Anthony Miller. "So much had happened. I still
feel like I'm dreaming," she said. And why not? Brown Sugar has now claimed the top spot of being the 2009 Digicel Rising
Star winner, she is a million dollars richer, in addition to having several other fantastic prizes at her disposal. numerous
struggles
Brown Sugar
has always mentioned about her numerous struggles faced back at home, in Montego Bay. But for now, she expects everyone to be
in a jubilant mood. "Me sure seh right now di whole a Mobay a mash up and a go mad right now," she pointed out.
Brown Sugar also recalled her most memorable moments throughout the competition, but it was having
the exposure and being around the other contestants, whom she grew to love, that she counted as her ultimate. "A nuff
nice time me experience... but me affi say di exposure whe me get and having the other contestants around stands out,"
an expressive Brown Sugar said. Princess Tia might be a 17-year old singer from Negril, but her gracious acceptance of defeat shows just how much
she has matured throughout the competition.
Weeks
ago, Judge Nadine Sutherland said Princess Tia had made a name for herself and was ready to show the world her talent. And
Princess Tia admitted that she had never thought about where she would finish in the competition, but said: "I'm very
very proud of myself, more than what words can explain. I just leave everything to God." Princess Tia walked away with
a second place cash prize of $600,000 and several other awards.
Brown Sugar's victory has continued on a streak of female winners, which was started by Cameal Davis (last year's
winner), who had performed earlier. The first four winners of the Rising Stars competition were males. Source: Jamaica Star
